White Island InSAR update

Back in early 2020 I took a look at Sentinel-1 data for White Island over the eruption period and was amazed to see steady inflation on the crater floor leading up to the deadly eruption on December 9th 2019. This inflation was and continues right under the tourist walking path (see white line in Figure A below)! Even more intriguing is a sudden subsidence just prior to the eruption (see arrows in Figure B below).


This first blog entry is to give an update in White Island. As you can see in Figure B, the subsidence did not last long - the crater floor resumed inflating in late January and has been inflating ever since, possibly building towards another eruption!


Note: the time series (Figure B) is derived from the average motion of points inside the green boundary (Figure A).
